PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIC
Impakt Festival Utrecht
The Impakt Festival Utrecht presents PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIC
Three films to send you into the abyss. It starts with a trivial little melody that gets stuck in your head ends with a bloody mutilation and an entire country on the brink of total devastation.
The Third Man
Erik Bünger, Germany/the Netherlands, video, 40:00 min.
A work about an elusive entity that answers to the name “The Third Man.” He takes up residence in the body of Julie Andrews, reducing seven innocent children to notes in the diatonic scale. He is the Pied Piper who lures the children of Hamlin with his music. He is the voice of every pregnant woman bathing her helpless unborn child in song. He is the subject of Kylie Minogue’s refrain: “I just can’t get you out of my head.” In his film, Bünger weaves physical theories, philosophy and religion with archetypical film images and musical elements. Following in the footsteps of The Third Man, Bünger takes us along on an exploration of the sinister meaning of music.
Sissiaen Lahio (The Suburb Within)
Pekka Sassi, Finland 2009, 11:29 min.
A film about communication, narration and presence. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow
is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
Rip in Pieces America
Dominic Gagnon, Canada 2009, video, 21:00 min.
Rip in Pieces America comprises a collection of webcam clips that were quickly removed from the Internet due to their controversial or explicit nature. Operating in a grey area as far as copyright is concerned, Dominic Gagnon presents the virtual declarations of various individuals who are concerned about the future of the United States. Seated alone in front of their computers wearing masks or menacing outfits in some cases, they express their apocalyptic views with tireless fervour.
