Telcosystems

12_series (2010)

Sometimes it seems like computers lead their own life. This is practically the case in the installation 12_series by Telcosystems aka Lucas van der Velden, Gideon Kiers and David Kiers. The three developed a computer programme that sheds insight into two crucial generative principles: evolutionary development and decentralised, autonomous decision-making.

Twelve identical engines and speakers powered by an equal number of audio-visual machines are set up in a pitch black room. The machines respond to one other. As they imitate each another and keep changing, collectively they create a variety of audio-visual landscapes. The machines try to break free from the group, but their efforts are in vain; after all, the other machines continue to react to the sounds and images.

Telcosystems uses their audiovisual works to explore the relationship between programming (numerical logic) and human perception of the behaviour in question. This group of today’s heroes attempts to integrate human expression and programmed machine behaviour, not only using installations such as 12_series, but also in films, videos, soundtracks, publications and live performances.

Credits: 12_Series is produced by Spatial Media Laboratories in collaboration with Baltan Laboratories and Wood Street Galleries. 12_Series is made possible with the generous support of Fonds BKVB, Mondriaan Foundation, The Netherlands Film Fund and DKC Rotterdam.
