EXPLORING TOUCH AS A VR MEDIUM

POLYMORF & SRIRAM SUBRAMANIAM

Most VR productions promise to fully immerse audiences in a story and to bring about a more embodied involvement. In reality only a very limited spectrum of the human sensorium is stimulated. Sight, and to a lesser degree sound, are the dominant senses that are mediated to create a 360 experience. Scent, taste and touch are mostly ignored. And that is a waste, for it is these so-called ‘lower senses’ that promise to engage a public in a more primal, emotional and corporeal way. This masterclass led by Polymorf and Sriram Subramanian, professor of mathematics and head of the Interact Lab of Sussex University, has it’s focus on touch. Participants will experience tactile sensations in mid-air by the Ultrahaptics board, which uses ultrasound to generate touch feedback.
