Leanne Wijnsma received a BA in Graphic Design from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2009 and a Masters in Visual Strategies from the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam in 2013. She has received an e-culture grant from the Dutch Cultural Media Fund to research and develop the Smell of Data-project. Early February, she also won the STRP Award for Creative Technology (ACT): “A wonderfully layered and many-facetted project that brings together the digital and the sensorial in a surprising and meaningful way,” says the jury. In the documentary, which is premiering at STRP Biennial, she shows us her search for a more instinctive internet. Smell guides us, because our noses used to be one of our best survival mechanisms in identifying danger. In the digital domain, this no longer works because data or malware does not spread alarming smells. Smell of Data makes visitors conscious in a sensorial way of the data that they leak and the dangers that this can entails.
