In 2021 STRP asks the question: how can we better serve the collective as individuals? How can technology be used to unite us, instead of dividing us? And what can we learn from the collectivity of organisms, bird flocks and cells?
We live in a divided world. Social media networks, created for connection instead established political bubbles, and feelings of isolation. Consumerism gives us the feeling of a world entirely designed around us, with no need for negotiation with others. And the covid crisis takes away seeing each other face-to-face, reducing human contact to on-screen meetings. At the same time, the rebirth of the collective has risen past few years. Occupy, #metoo, Black Lives Matter and climate change groups underline the need for a vision on what unites us, instead of focusing solely on what makes each of us unique.

Lynne believes we have lost the art of “radical happiness”—the liberation that comes with transformative, collective joy. She argues that instead of obsessing about our own well-being, we should seek fulfilment in the lives of others. She looks at the relationship between love and sex, and the scope for utopian thinking as a means to a better future. She shows how the gaps in care, that come from the diminishing role of the welfare state, must be replaced by alternative ways of living together and looking after one another. Segal proposes that the power of true happiness can only be discovered collectively.

Lynne Segal is an Australian-born, British-based socialist feminist academic and activist, author of many books and articles, and participant in many campaigns, for local and international communities. She is a former Anniversary Professor of Psychology and Gender Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, where she now works in the School of Psychosocial Studies.

Architect, designer, and director Liam Young and choreographer Jacob Jonas joined forces and were inspired by the surveillance networks used during the protests in Hong Kong. They developed a dance performance and film Choreographic Camouflage, which examines a new movement vocabulary to confuse the surveillance for STRP Festival 2021.
Liam will guide you through a range of projects he has developed and is working on right now.

Danielle Brathwaite Shirley is a radical London and Berlin based artist, game developer, animator, performer and mother. She expresses and archives the experiences of Black trans women through video game aesthetics and innovative technologies. Through her art practice and activism she gives attention to the lack of visibilty for Black trans people in mainstream culture, and to everyday racism and colorism. She is in the making of work for STRP Festival 2021 and will present a preview.

Hyphen Labs is an international collective working at the intersection of technology, art, science, and the future. Through their global vision and multi-disciplinary backgrounds, they are driven to create engaging ways to explore planetary-centered design. In the process they challenge conventions and stimulate conversations, placing collective needs and experiences at the center of evolving narratives.

Audiovisual artist Boris Acket, composer Maarten Vos & soprano Elisabeth Hetherington have a shared fascination for choral music. One of the first types of music that lifted mankind through collaboration, with the enormous reverberation in cathedrals and churches. Now we live in a world almost free from these kinds of communal rituals. At this evening you will be indulged with a virtual version of their work named CHORUS.
