Interview Liam Young & Forest Swords
STRP Biennale 2017 was fortunate enough to present Liam Young’s latest work ‘In The Robot Skies’; a short film that is entirely shot by autonomous drones and tells two intertwining stories. One portrays a near-future scenario for London, England, through a new type of romance about two teenagers, while the other story is about ‘the drone’, which is told from a drone’s perspective.
On the evening of April 1st, when Liam’s film was shown (as performative piece) with him narrating through a slightly robotic effect on his microphone to emphasize ‘the dronyness’; the lucky ones attending the event were delighted to see and hear that Forest Swords (Matthew Barnes) was on stage alongside Liam playing music as the film played.
Originally the interview was supposed to be about the collaboration with Forest Swords for the performance; the ways in which society deals with new technological developments; and the issue of trust that comes along with our near-futures of technology; but after one specific scene in the film about the lithium pools (mines) of Bolivia and Chile, where Liam shows the first-ever drone footage of this eye-tearing place; is when the interview also took a turn towards the undeniably linked exploitation of Earth’s natural resources within these futures.
Enjoy the interview 🙂
