OYAYI

KWAGO

What goes through your mind when you are locked up in a crowded prison, where perhaps thousands of voices can be heard, but no one is really listening?

Based on the belief that deep listening is a collective act, artist collective KWAGO organised collaborative poetry sessions in a women's prison in the Philippines. These sessions were inspired by Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening practice and traditional forms of pre-colonial spoken poetry. As the captives recited poems, KWAGO recorded their heartbeats.

These heartbeats, along with audio recordings of the female prisoners' poems, lullabies and longings, will echo through the walls of the installation at STRP. Although not clearly audible, with effort and the right intentions you get the chance to really listen to the thoughts and prayers of these women. This project challenges you to look beyond the structures that confine these women. How can we listen to voices that are blocked and hard to hear behind thick concrete walls?

Oyayi is the Filipino word for ‘lullaby’, while pintig at himig sa bilibid translates as 'heartbeat and voice in prison'.

KWAGO (PH) is an artistic laboratory for collective intelligence, co-creation and chance in the Philippines. The initiative was co-developed by Czyka Tumaliuan (writer, publisher and community organiser) and Issay Rodriguez (artist, beekeeper and teacher) together with various organisations and individuals - a child, a mother, a therapist, a poet, a sound artist, philosopher, a prisoner, historian, curators, engineer, hackers and teacher. The installation was designed by artist Marco Ortiga.
