ACT Award winner Ling Tan presents an interactive game to get audiences reflecting on the concept of democracy, titled ‘Playing Democracy 2.0’.
Can we collectively experiment with different forms of social structure through play? Democracy implies freedom, equality and fairness, but also responsibility. The balance between individual and collective experience is delicate. And when the equilibrium tilts, to what extent do we choose to participate, and can democracy still persist if we hold different values?
Playing Democracy 2.0 is a giant 4-player Pong game where players control game paddles using their body movements. Each time a team scores a point, they can choose to change one of six game rules designed around principles of democracy. Different national anthems play as the game evolves, reflecting the current game’s supposed democratic state.
What happens when you and your opponent have the chance to make the game (un)fair? Can the very principles themselves lead to the collapse of the system, or better yet, to a new paradigm?
