Can "listening" be defined in a single sentence? In the past six months, the students of Fontys University of Applied Sciences have been exploring this. Under supervision of Open Media Lab Telemagic (Roos Groothuizen and Ymer Marinus), and with guest lectures by philosopher Miriam Rasch and DJ Femke Dekker, they became acquainted with the special aspects of listening. Concepts such as deep listening, transcendental listening and activated listening were discussed and explored.
In The Fontys Listening Lab you can see and hear the results of their research. What started with a walk through the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park, ends in an 'urban forest' in the city center of Eindhoven. Listening to nature, an activity that universally engages us from day to day, is central to this temporary forest. What is there to listen to within this new context? And what happens when you can play with those sounds?
