Last Grain of Sand

Post Neon

Sand is one of nature's most valuable resources. We use it for an infinite range of applications: from making glass and concrete to nano-scale microchips. Unfortunately, the amount of sand in the world is not infinite and the ever-increasing demand threatens to create a global scarcity. In the installation, Last Grain of Sand, part of the Post Now Series that tackles forthcoming resource scarcities, the visitor embarks on a journey that explores our connection with sand.

The core of the project is an imaginary journey based on the final lecture of Michael Welland, a British sand expert. This journey consists of five chapters: Genesis, Human Alchemy, Greed, Anthropocene and Natural Relic. In the Virtual Reality (VR) experience with immersive audio, the visitor is taken along in the narrative. Last Grain of Sand demonstrates that the scarcity of sand caused by man is a subject that must be discussed before the beauty of sand is lost.
