Time Displaced

Juan Arturo García

As a remnant of the Cold War, IAN-R1, the first nuclear reactor in Colombia, has always been clouded in mystery: regarded by some to be an atomic bomb, deemed as a scientists’ toy by others. Time Displaced is a research project and film installation about this nuclear reactor to explore: how can re-enactment of alternative narratives lead to other readings of reality?

Artist Juan Arturo García sees the geochronology (the science of determining the age of rocks, fossils and sediments) as a way of attunement into the earth, with listening as its starting point. Time Displaced shows different approaches of listening to the earth: from modern scientific techniques to native knowledge and acoustic memories of living with nature in Latin America that have been silenced for centuries.

Sound Design: Nicolás Sánchez

Juan Arturo García (MX) is developing a research-based practice that explores accented ways of living, their biopolitical affordances, and tactics for their representation. His ongoing investigation delves into the production of scientific knowledge in Latin America throughout history, with a particular focus on how complex intertwining of technical, cultural, mystical, and political desires have been deployed – and how to understand their consequences.
